Horse riding can positively influence the treatment of diseases. The disabled person riding a horse must inadvertently rearrange his/her posture so as to balance and maintain his/her upright position against every movement of the horse. Therefore, the movement of the horse’s body causes the rider to respond with completely reflective movements. Hence therapeutic horse riding has a special therapeutic influence on people with motor disability. The moving horse, particularly for a child with special competences, is a strong motive that is used by the therapist to achieve this aim. At the same time the child is allowed to “make up” for the mobility limitations he/she experiences, which influences positively the child’s mental and emotional development and his/her rapport to the broader environment.
We have been working, over recent years, with the Therapeutic Riding Association of Greece (T.R.A.G.), based in Goudi, so as to further and effectively assist the traditional physiotherapy. Sessions last half an hour, once a week and take place in an outdoors safe track.
Our personnel that participates is sufficiently trained by a Scientific Responsible Riding Trainer appointed by Hadjipaterion Center (physiotherapist, occupational therapist).
In accordance with T.R.A.G.’s rules, the children participating are 3 years of age and above. Each child’s therapeutic program is designed in relation to his/her background, competences (mental and motor), as well as the intervention it follows. Our Scientific Responsible Trainer designs the program working together with the Interdisciplinary Team that observes the child. The results of the intervention are diverse. These include regularization of the muscle tone, improvement of head and body control, avoiding myoskeletal deformations, as well as improvement of the cardiorespiratory disorders each child is facing.
Therapeutic horse riding in an amusing for the children, additional rehabilitation method aiming at the overall approach to each child’s disorder.
